I discovered a glaring error in the History/Social Sciences test I recently administered to my 4th graders. One item not only referred to Arlington as a city, it was the expected correct answer. Arlington is not a city. I verified this fact with a public information officer in Arlington County. I grew up in Arlington and knew this. Some of the materials I have been given to use in instruction and review for the SOL test have also referred to Arlington as a city, and I have corrected this for my students. I am sure many of my students missed this item because they have been taught that Arlington is not a city. Has anyone else found errors in actual test items? I find this inexcusable.
Just curious - if Arlington is not a city, what is it? A county or a town? I always thought it was a city. That is a good example of cultural bias on the test. Students who live in Arlington would certainly know the (correct) answer, but those from other areas would not.

You are entirely correct that the reference to Arlington as a city is incorrect on the History/Social Science SOL test you recently administered to your 4th graders. This item was field tested and students did well on it. The Content Review Committee looked at it numerous times and did not see this. Obviously, we appreciate your bringing it to our attention. A correction will be made.
