Art SOL's have not been updated since 1987. Why has the Department of Education not initiated efforts to update these SOL's? Will an effort to update these SOL's be launched in the near future?
Dear Ms. Harvey:
How about updated SOLs for Foreign Language?

The first SOLs for art, music, and theatre were passed in 1983. In 1989 the SOLs for art and music were revised. You are correct in pointing out that there have been no modifications since then.
There is discussion at the Department of Education about revisiting this issue. If you would like more information, please contact Cherry Gardner, Principal Specialist for Fine Arts, Department of Education, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, Virginia 23218.
Thank you for expressing your views.

The proposed SOLs are not yet adopted. Sadly, if your class does not have to improve scores on SOL tests, the subject matter is perceived as less important.

I am replying to your e-mail message of January 14 regarding Standards of Learning for foreign languages.
Standards of Learning developed by the state Department of Education for instruction in foreign languages, art, and other subjects are still effective for public schools. No effort is being made by the Department of Education at this time to revise standards for those subjects. If you would like more information, please contact Linda Wallinger, associate specialist, foreign languages/ESL, Department of Education, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, Virginia 23218, (804) 225-2593.
Thank you.
