not in the Va.SOLs for grades 4-8?

I am replying to your e-mail message of January 6 regarding General George C. Marshall. The History and Social Science Standards of Learning (SOL) adopted by the Board of Education identify broad categories of content covering people and events. Although many historical figures are identified by name and deed, others of no less importance are omitted for various reasons. Clearly, it would be impossible for the SOL to list every important person and event from American and world history.
While General George C. Marshall is not mentioned by name in the standards for grades 4-8, a study of the events identified in United States History: 1877 to the Present (i.e., standards 6.6, 6.7, and 6.8) would focus on the many contributions that General Marshall made to the United States' efforts during World War II and to the recovery of Europe following the war. Clearly he is a distinguished Virginian and celebrated American who has earned a prominent place in our history.
If additional information is needed, please get in touch with Mr. Harvey Carmichael, specialist, history and social science, State Department of Education, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, Virginia 23218.
Thank you.
