In the past week at my school, we've enrolled two fifth-graders who are arriving from other states. They have not been taught our curriculum, and though we would hope they have basic skills in math, reading, and writing, they SURELY have no background in VA history. Yet they are required to take the full battery of SOL tests beginning on Monday, and their scores will be reported as if they'd been our students all along. Does this make sense?

Thank you for your question regarding transfer students. There is currently no exemption for transfer students arriving in Virginia near the time of testing. I agree with you that this is less of an issue in math, reading, and writing but Virginia history is also an issue. The Board of Education is currently looking at what, if any, accommodations should be made for transient students. I will pass your concern along as these discussions take place. The Board of Education is aware of the issue and will work to see what decisions are needed.
If you need further assistance please call Ms. Cameron Harris, Assistant Superintendent for Assessment and Reporting, at (804) 225-2102.
