Governor Almond was an attorney from Roanoke, who also served as Congressman, Attorney General and Judge of the Roanoke Hustings Court. After state and federal courts ruled against the state's policy of segregating public schools, Governor Almond worked to repeal the "massive resistance" laws. He was later appointed by President Kennedy to a federal judgeship.
