Installation Instructions

To install Information Server, follow the instructions for your platform.

Upgrade Scenarios

If you are reinstalling Information Server V3.6, or upgrading from a previous version, you have a choice regarding how Information Server is installed.

Upgrade Existing Installation

When you choose to upgrade an existing installation, the following occurs:

where installdir is the full path to the directory in which you installed Information Server, and language is the locale language. You must manually copy back from /template.old any templates you want to continue to use.

Clean Installation Over Existing Installation

When you choose to install over your existing installation, the following occurs:

Clean Installation to a New Directory

When you choose to install to a new directory, the following occurs:

Maintain the old directory structure - Simply import the old collections from their existing location and optionally delete all other Information Server files. All you need to maintain is the collection files.

Copy the collections to the new directory structure - If you do not want any part of the previous installation to remain in your file system, copy the collection files to the new installation structure. You will still have to import the collections to introduce them to the new installation.

WARNING! If you had any collections built with the command-line Verity Spider which used file system indexing and relative paths, you should reindex your documents so the new relative path structure is incorporated. If you do not reindex and the new collection path does not have the same relative paths to your documents, users will not be able to view the documents.

UNIX

Follow these instructions to install Information Server on a UNIX platform.

1. Mount the installation CD's file system. Refer to your system manuals or ask a system administrator for details on your specific system.

Your paths may differ for the CD system device and the final device name.

2. Change the working directory to the root directory of the installation CD, and then execute the installation script by typing the following at the shell prompt:

./install.sh

As prompted, enter `Y' to confirm that it's running on a supported platform.

3. As prompted, press `Enter' to display the license agreement. Press the space bar to advance to the next page. As prompted, enter `Y' to accept the license agreement.

4. As prompted specify the destination directory to which you will install.

5. Specify the web server to use with Information Server V3.6. Choose "None of the above" if you are installing for a non-certified server.

If you choose None of the above, the SEARCH'97 Information Server V3.6 files will be copied to your hard drive only. You will have to manually configure your web server for Information Server, and only for CGI. For more information, see "Configuring Other Web Servers" later in this chapter.

If you are installing to Apache, review the information in "Configuring Apache Web Server V1.20" after the installation is complete.

6. Specify the full path to your server. For example:

/usr/local/netscape/ns-home/https-quest

If you chose to install for Netscape Server, you will be prompted to select the specific server you are using. Note that Netscape 1.x and 3.0 web servers are no longer certified.

7. If prompted, answer yes to have your web server stopped. If you are installing to a Netscape web server, you will also be prompted to stop the Netscape Admin server. Servers will be restarted at the end of the installation.

8. Specify the name of your proxy host, and then the port number, if necessary. Press Enter without entering a proxy for none. You can change this information at any time on the Network Options page in the Server Setup admin pages.

9. Specify the user name for the Information Server admin user account. Press Enter to accept the default user account, verity-admin. Then specify a password for the admin user account. You will be prompted to type the password again to confirm it.

10. Specify the port numbers for administration and search/view. Press enter without entering a port at each prompt to accept the default values of 8989 for administration, and 8990 for search/view.

11. If you installed to an Apache web server, information about modified files is displayed. Copies of the files were backed up before the modifications, and their location is displayed.

12. Specify whether you are installing a 30 day evaluation copy of SEARCH'97 Information Server.

If you choose No, the install script proceeds to the next step for licensing information.

If you choose Yes, you will not be prompted for licensing information. Your evaluation copy includes a fully functioning evaluation version of SEARCH'97 Agent Server V1.11, and a version of the Verity Spider that allows indexing of any network-accessible file system, and web crawling of any host in the default domain.

After the 30 day evaluation period, the Verity Spider, Agent Server and Information Server will cease to work and only the Information Server License Manager will be enabled so you can enter a separately purchased upgrade license. Contact your Verity sales representative for more information about upgrading to a fully licensed version of SEARCH'97 Information Server and optionally, SEARCH'97 Agent Server and Verity Spider.

13. Enter an upgraded Verity Spider license key, or press enter to continue. You need to enter a license key only if you specifically purchased an upgraded Verity Spider license key for additional indexing capabilities.

14. Enter the application, signature, and license information exactly as it appears on the license sheet supplied by Verity with your software.

The signature and license strings are of the form:

0123-4567-89AB-CDEF-0123

NOTE: All "0"s in Signature and License fields are the digit zero. (No letter "O" characters are used.) You must enter the organization name, signature, and license exactly as they appear on your site license form. (This includes white space and punctuation.)

After entering the license information (Organization, Signature, and License), press Enter at the Organization: prompt to exit the licensing program.

15. The install script begins installing SEARCH'97 Agent Server V1.1.1, and later, the Verity Daemon Control Manager (DCM) is installed.

By default, the DCM will try to install to port 1972. If this port is not taken, the installation will simply proceed and provide the location of the installation log. If port 1972 is already taken by a program other than a previous DCM, then you will be prompted to specify a new port number.

If you are upgrading or reinstalling and did not shut down the previous DCM, then the following message is displayed:

A DCM is already running from another installation.
Please select one of the following options:

1) Shutdown the DCM on port 1972 and reinstall a new DCM
2) Install another DCM on a different port.

Make your selection. If you choose to install another DCM, a default port of 1973 is offered.

16. Note the information provided by the DCM daemon installer. Press return to continue.

17. If you installed to a Netscape server, information about modified files is displayed. Copies of the files were backed up before the modifications, and their location is displayed.

If you installed to a Netscape server and you are prompted to restart your web server and the Netscape Admin Server, answer "Y". Note these instructions, which you need to follow after installation is completed:

Caution - Your Netscape configuration files have been successfully updated. For these changes to take effect in the Netscape Administrative Server, do the following:
1) Start the Netscape Administrative Server.
2) Select your server.
3) Netscape will display a message indicating changes have been made to your configuration files. Click OK.
4) Click the Apply button on the upper right side of the screen.
18. The SEARCH'97 Information Server home page and admin page URLs are displayed. They are:

Description
URL
Admin Page for NSAPI
http://webserver:port/search97secure/s97a.vta
home page
http://webserver:port/search97

19. When the installer has finished it will display a message. Press `return' to continue.

20. An information message similar to the following is displayed:

In order to run command-line utilities from this installation, it may be necessary for you to add installdir/platform/bin to your system's SHLIB_PATH environment variable. Alternatively, you may opt to copy or link the required shared libraries into the appropriate system directory, usually /usr/lib or /usr/local/lib. The libraries to copy (if you choose) are:
libvdk200.sl

NOTE: The elements SHLIB_PATH and libvdk200.sl may differ depending on your platform.

21. When the installation is done, you will see the message, "Installation ends." You are ready to launch your browser and use SEARCH'97 Information Server V3.6.

If you did not allow the installation program to automatically restart your Web server, be sure to stop and restart it on your own in order for the changes made by the installation program to take effect.

Windows NT

Follow these instructions to install SEARCH'97 Information Server on the Windows NT Server 4.0 (Intel only) operating system.

1. Insert the CD into the drive. If you have autoplay enabled, the setup program will automatically start.

If you do not have autoplay enabled, type the following in the Run dialog box:

D:\s97is360\_nti31\setup.exe

where D: is your CD drive. Click OK.

2. In the Welcome dialog, review the information and click Next to continue. If you have less than 64 megabytes of memory, the installation program will display a warning and ask if you want to continue. Click Yes to continue.

3. As prompted, select whether or not to display the Product Notes. If you choose yes, the cover page will be displayed in your default browser. Use Alt+Tab to return to the setup program.

4. If you have an existing version of SEARCH'97 Information Server on your system, you will be prompted to either accept the default choice of upgrading, or choose a clean install.

Click Next to continue.

5. In the Software License Agreement dialog, review the license agreement. Be sure to read through the agreement and scroll to the bottom. To accept the license agreement, click I agree, and then click Next.

6. As prompted, specify whether you are installing a full version or a 30 day evaluation copy of SEARCH'97 Information Server.

If you choose 30 day evaluation, you will not be prompted for licensing information. Your evaluation copy includes a fully functioning evaluation version of SEARCH'97 Agent Server V1.1.1, and a version of the Verity Spider that allows indexing of any network-accessible file system, and web crawling of any host in the default domain.

7. Select the web server for which you want to install SEARCH'97 Information Server V3.6. Only installed web servers will be available.

During an upgrade, your previous web server choice will be selected by default.

If you choose "Web server not detected, copy files only," the Information Server and Agent Server files will be copied to your hard disk, but you will still need to manually configure your web server. For more information, see "Configuring Other Web Servers" later in these notes.

Click Next to continue.

8. If you are installing to Microsoft's Internet Information Server (version 3.0 or 4.0), and you are performing a new install, you will be prompted to specify a port number for the Verity DCM service. Click Next to accept the default value of 1972, or specify a different port number. Make sure you do not specify a port number that is already in use.

9. If you are installing to Microsoft's Internet Information Server V3.0, and it is set with Allow Anonymous off, you will be prompted with a dialog box where you can either choose to have Allow Anonymous turned on, or you can specify a user account for anonymous access to non-administrative Information Server URLs such as those for search forms. Make your selection and follow the prompts.

For more information, see "Server Anonymous Access" later in these notes.

10. For a new install, enter the proxy host and port information for your site, if applicable.

11. For a new install, select a username and password for the Information Server administrator account in the Administration Information dialog. Enter a port number for the administration server if you don't want the default value. Click Next to continue.

12. For a new install, specify the target directory for SEARCH'97 Information Server in the Choose Destination Location dialog. Click Next to install the product in the default target directory,
C:\Verity\IS, or click Browse to find another target directory. If the directory you selected does not exist, the installation program will ask you if you want to create it. Click Yes.

13. In the Select Program Folder dialog, select the Program Folder in which you want the program icons to appear. Click Next to continue.

14. In the Start Copying Files dialog, the installation program displays the settings you've made in the last several steps of the installation procedure. Review your selected settings to be sure they are correct. Click Next to continue, or Back to retrace your steps and edit your previous choices as necessary.

15. The installation program then restarts your Web server, and the Information Server administration server if an upgrade.

16. If you are installing an evaluation version of Information Server, you will not be prompted for licensing information. If you are installing a fully registered version, even if it's an upgrade, then you will need to enter your licensing information. Information Server and Agent Server are licensed separately, so make sure you are entering the appropriate license. In the Registration dialog, enter the appropriate values for your Name, Organization, Signature, and License. Then click Next.

Enter the information exactly as it is appears on the license sheet supplied by Verity with your software. The signature and license strings are of the form:

0123-4567-89AB-CDEF-0123

NOTE: All "0"s in Signature and License fields are the digit zero. (No letter "O" characters are used.) You must enter the organization name, signature, and license exactly as they appear on your site license form. (This includes white space, upper and lower case letters, and punctuation.)

You may also enter an upgraded Spider license key if you have purchased one. Click Next after entering your Information Server license key information to get to the Spider license prompt.

Entering licensing information is an important step of the installation procedure for each platform, and it is required on the initial installation only. It creates the license file vdk20.lic in the common directory, which is under the Verity installation directory.

17. If you are installing Information Server for a Netscape Web server, you will be prompted with the following instructions after installation is completed:

Caution - Your Netscape configuration files have been successfully updated. For these changes to take effect in the Netscape Administrative Server, do the following:
1) Start the Netscape Administrative Server.
