Background

In 1997 under the competitively bid Public Procurement Act, the Commonwealth of Virginia awarded Virginia Interactive a contract to streamline and enhance the ways in which citizens and businesses access government information. From 1997 – 2003, Virginia Interactive was branded as the Virginia Information Providers Network, VIPNet, with oversight from an advisory board, the VIPNet Authority. In 2003, the VIPNet Authority was abolished by legislation in the General Assembly, and the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) assumed management of Virginia Interactive’s contract and priorities. At this time, Virginia Interactive began branding the portal and services as Virginia.gov.

The public-private partnership is a revolutionary concept in the way government, businesses, educational institutions, and private citizens work together to accomplish common goals. Virginia.gov is committed to making communication with government quicker and more convenient for residents and businesses throughout the Commonwealth.
