NIC eGovernment Innovation and Virginia Interactive:
Progressing into the Future Together with Mobile Technology
Overview:
As the leader in eGovernment, NIC helps its partners stay at forefront of technology and trends. One of the fastest growing trends is the adoption of mobile phones as a means of conducting business and accessing information. Use of mobile phones for more than voice calls will continue to climb as Smartphones gain market share.
Innovation Factors:
Smart-phone devices are rapidly becoming one of the primary ways people access information. NIC has developed applications that use many of the features of these mobile devices. This includes leveraging GPS, camera, and internet access.
Performance Indicators:
Arkansas.gov
- “Arkansas.gov Recovery Project Search” allows users to search projects funded by federal stimulus dollars and allows users to find these neighborhood and community projects by using the iPhone’s GPS capability. The “AG&FC” app allows hunters to check game and view season dates and bag limits. Anglers can view fishing reports, use the fish identification search, and see Arkansas record catches. A personalized trophy case allows users to upload their photos and trophy information which can be shared on Facebook, AGFC.com and email.
Alabama.gov
- The Mobile Inspection application by the Alabama Board of Cosmetology allows inspectors to inspect salons via Smart Phones and send results to salon owners through email or e-fax, eliminating the need for paper inspections.
Utah.gov
- The state of Utah was the first government entity to create an iPhone application in April 2009. The "Utah Professional License Lookup” is a searchable database used to verify the status of individuals with a state-regulated occupation or profession. It displays the basic license information and color-codes the results based on active, inactive, suspended, or expired.
Federal Bureau of Investigation
- NIC developed “Most Wanted” for the iPhone that provides real-time information from the FBI regarding wanted individuals and missing children. This application has been downloaded by over 700,000 individuals.
