• Virginia Interactive LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of NIC, was chosen as the private partner to manage Virginia.gov in 1997. NIC maintains long-term outsourcing contracts with 20 states in North America.
  
  
• The Virginia.gov portal was deployed in September 1998.
  
  
• In 2002, the Commonwealth of Virginia renewed its contract with Virginia Interactive through August 2007.
  
  
• In 2006, the Commonwealth of Virginia renewed its contract with Virginia Interactive through August 2012.
  
  
• A public-private partnership model is used to manage the portal, with primary funding for the portal coming from the assessment of modest transaction or convenience fees to end users (primarily businesses) for a select set of services. Traditional means of access to all information and services are still available.
  


• Virginia.gov has won a top placement in the Best of the Web contest every year eligible to compete since 2001.
  
  
• Virginia Interactive employs twenty one full-time staff members.
  
  
• State departments, agencies, boards and commissions, as well as cities and counties in the Commonwealth, have a web presence on the Virginia.gov portal, gaining efficiencies and economies by providing information online through a single window of government.
  
  
• 90% of all information and services available through Virginia.gov are free to the public.
  
  
• More than 46% of the accesses to the state portal are done while government offices are closed
  
  
• Over 200 Virginia state and local government entities currently use one or more services provided by Virginia.gov
