Website design has evolved over the years. In the early days, sites were mainly a listing of links and animated gifs. The cooler the design effects, the better. As the need for information increased, sites struggled to find ways to incorporate exponentially growing content. The target audience for websites also extended, from the technically proficient to a wide spectrum of the population, spanning diverse ages, cultures, literacy levels and abilities.

With over ten years of managing the Commonwealth of Virginia’s portal, Virginia.gov has established a reputation of excellence and expertise in creating intuitive and usable websites. Over the past few years, Virginia.gov was instrumental in assisting with the Commonwealth’s Policies, Standards and Guidelines (PSGs) for executive branch agencies. These standards were developed to ensure websites would be usable, share certain common look elements and comply with the American Disabilities Act, 508 Guidelines and the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative.
