Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) works to conserve, protect, enhance and advocate wise use of the commonwealth's unique natural, historical, recreational, scenic and cultural resources.

Agency Info

Whether it's helping localities with floodplain ordinances, explaining flood insurance or certifying the structural integrity of dams, DCR staff helps reduce flooding to protect citizens and their property. Each decade, floods cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damage and, in Virginia, about 2,000 dams are regulated. Most are owned by individuals or governments. DCR engineers certify those dams' safety and integrity.
